Intermediary Labour Markets
Urban II is supporting an Intermediate Labour Market to help tackle long-term unemployment and promote community-based regeneration. The project acts as a bridge to employment by developing skills and enhancing employment opportunities. The programme has been established in partnership with the public, private business, community and voluntary sectors in order to maximise success through the inclusion of all relevant parties. Job related training, personal development and work placements are offered to individuals from the Urban II area of Inner North Belfast. Support will be provided to both employer and employee during placements and job search assistance will be given to increase employment and end of placements. In recognition of the many barriers to employment in Inner North Belfast, support for childcare and other caring responsibilities will be available. Following public tender, funding of £600,000 over 3 years has been approved in principle, to a consortium bid from North Belfast Employment Centre, Ashton Centre Developments and Lower North Belfast Community Council. The proposal is in the final stage of assessment with an economic appraisal currently being considered by the appropriate government department. The Department of Employment and Learning support similar initiatives in other parts of the city via their Targeted Initiatives.
