Access to Services

North Belfast experiences a number of multiple problems characterised by lack of access to the labour market, educational opportunity and services and facilities. These are compounded by the ethno-religious geography of the area and the way that this further isolates already depressed communities from growth opportunities elsewhere in the urban economy.

One of the key aims of the North Belfast Partnership Strategy is to target the causes of social deprivation by improving access to services: principally health, education, housing, social security and environmental.

While this is integral to the work of many of the programmes and projects which we deliver or sponsor, it is the primary focus of our Social Development Programme.

It is also the key objective of the grant support offered under measure 2.1 Accessibility of the Urban II Programme. The intent is to link the population of North Belfast with opportunities in the mainstream economy by promoting access to training, employment and job opportunities outside and within the area. This measure has allocated over £600,000 to community projects targeting support for Employment & Training Outreach Services, Job Centred Transport Schemes, Employment related Childcare Services and Basic and Key Skills. View Measure 2.1 projects.

A number of ‘Employability’ focused programmes may also secure funding support under this measure
