First Citizen and Star Beauty Turn Out for Youth
Date: 25/02/2008

Belfast's First Citizen and North Belfast's star beauty are stepping out for the cause of youth in the Upper Ardoyne area of North Belfast.

Belfast Lord Mayor, Jim Rodgers OBE and Current Miss Northern Ireland, Melissa Patton will cut the ribbon opening the new state-of-the-art Upper Ardoyne Youth Centre on Monday 25 February at 6.00pm. at Alliance Drive, Upper Ardoyne, North Belfast.

The £350 000 cost of the building has been entirely provided through the North Belfast Partnership (NBP), which is implementing the European Union's Urban II Programme.

According to Mr Jim Potts, the Coordinator of the Upper Ardoyne Youth Centre, the facility will provide a supervised environment in which young people from an area of high youth unemployment and other problems, will have access to basic sporting and recretional activities. There will also be a chill-out space and scope for young people to deal with well-being and other issues in a relaxed and sympathetic atmosphere."

NBP's Urban II Programme Manager, Mr Ciaran Shannon said the Partnership is delighted to support the improvement of infrastructure for young people. " I have been impressed with what Upper Ardoyne Youth Centre has achieved and I am sure that it will add to the quality of life for the young people in this part of North Belfast.

Young people are the life blood of any community and deserve the best facilities. The physical regeneration with a focus on youth provision in this project is a perfect example of what the Urban II Programme is all about," he continued.
